Week 15

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall this semester I'm rather pleased with the work output.  The introducing of model making in this unit was also interesting as it definitely got me thinking about scale.  There are a few things i wish to improve upon for next semester such as sketching my thoughts instead of testing them in Revit and moving on showing a lack of visible design process.

THOUGHTS

This week was spent finishing presentation drawings and last minute alterations to the final scheme.  Silently wishing there was an extra week or two as unfortunately have run out of time.

Perspectives

Perspectives were done in Photoshop over my preferred rendering program due to time constraints.  I was quite happy with the result and may pursue this visualization process in future projects.

Week 14

THOUGHTS
Last week was non eventful as assignments from other units proved to be very time consuming.  This week i have taken advantage of the assigned project week to finish off the design proposal and start on the presentation side of things for next Thursday.

1:200 Scale Model

Building process of the scale 1:200 Model.  The model is built from two materials.  Balsa and white card.  These materials are a favorite of mine as it shows a contrast of built form and natural form which is simple and easy to achieve quickly.

The model was built over the final week of semester and was built in stages which has been captured in the following images

Detail Sections

Thinking about how my building would go together i did some detail sections in my sketchbook and Revit.  As my design proposal would rely heavily on concrete construction i decided to take this direction with my details.

Week 13

HOME TIME:

This week i started looking at finer detail and functions for my design proposal as well as addressing some of the model making exercises.

Auditorium doors which open  inwards to allow people from the outside to see indoor sporting events.

Chicken Point Cabin was chosen as inspiration as it had the industrial type qualities which i wanted to follow through with in my design proposal.  The Industrial type door rotates on its central axis to open

Study Model Exercise 2

Shadow

I decided to do 2 models, one a tree and the other a modular layout to see how shadow is represented.
With both models there was a defining Umbra and Penumbra of shadow which was interesting and varying between a natural and modular setting.

Light

Under my desk lamp as well as ceiling light i wanted to reflect upon light intensity on different materials

Color Composition

For the third exercise i decided to do some color composition to see how colors can effect a small space.  I tried colors which would make the space recede (blue) make the space feel smaller (red) make the ceiling of the small area appear lower (black) and make the space feel large and open (white)

Study Model Exercise 3

For my detail model i decided to produce a louver system to understand the lighting and shadow conditions which were projected into the space.

Week 11

LECTURE:  14 May 2015

Todays lecture by Glenda discussed the design process through model making, using different materials to construct a massing form.  She showed many of her past architecture projects and discussed each in detail about the model making methods she used for her design process.

Mass Model

The idea of model making in the design process has so far alluded me up until the last week, as i only saw the model as a presentation model at the end of submission.  For this project however i have made a couple massing models thus far and have seen the benefits of holding it, rotating it, seeing where light and shadow form and scale.

TUTORIAL: 14 May 2015

The tutorial session was quite productive for me discussing with Julian about the auditorium space and its multiple uses with a few issues being rectified in the process.

Seating which can be extended from the wall was flawed as i didn't think about seating use during indoor sporting events, with Julian suggesting i replace this system with a fixed seating arrangement which could be used for basketball matches and then use removable seating which could be used for lectures by placing them on the court

Model making images

I decided to produce a massing model for this week based on previous design sketches so i could physically visualize what i was doing with the spaces.  It became evident to me that the auditorium space stuck out like a soar thumb which is something i didn't see in plan view.

Without reducing these masses as they are the required size for each building component i decided to reconfigure the massing model which would be more streamlined and not as imposing.

Model reconfiguration testing

Building masses were stacked on top of auditorium space reducing the footprint of the building mass, by doing this i felt the building began to feel a bit chunky so this idea was left behind.

The building mass was moved elongating the building form.  This arrangement allowed the building to flow much more cleanly.

The final example i decided to have the auditorium detached from the building mass to create 3 buildings instead of 2.  I think this arrangement would be most suitable for further design development as i think it has the most potential.

Design form sketches

Circulation through levels of the design could become more interesting and multipurpose by incorporating seating into stairs which could serve as places to watch mini performances and or relaxation as a few examples.

Simple sketches which were followed to produce my rough massing model
