Todays lecture by Glenda discussed the design process through model making, using different materials to construct a massing form. She showed many of her past architecture projects and discussed each in detail about the model making methods she used for her design process.
Mass Model

The idea of model making in the design process has so far alluded me up until the last week, as i only saw the model as a presentation model at the end of submission. For this project however i have made a couple massing models thus far and have seen the benefits of holding it, rotating it, seeing where light and shadow form and scale.

TUTORIAL: 14 May 2015
The tutorial session was quite productive for me discussing with Julian about the auditorium space and its multiple uses with a few issues being rectified in the process.
Seating which can be extended from the wall was flawed as i didn't think about seating use during indoor sporting events, with Julian suggesting i replace this system with a fixed seating arrangement which could be used for basketball matches and then use removable seating which could be used for lectures by placing them on the court

HOME TIME:
Model making images
I decided to produce a massing model for this week based on previous design sketches so i could physically visualize what i was doing with the spaces. It became evident to me that the auditorium space stuck out like a soar thumb which is something i didn't see in plan view.
Without reducing these masses as they are the required size for each building component i decided to reconfigure the massing model which would be more streamlined and not as imposing.
Model reconfiguration testing
Building masses were stacked on top of auditorium space reducing the footprint of the building mass, by doing this i felt the building began to feel a bit chunky so this idea was left behind.
The building mass was moved elongating the building form. This arrangement allowed the building to flow much more cleanly.
The final example i decided to have the auditorium detached from the building mass to create 3 buildings instead of 2. I think this arrangement would be most suitable for further design development as i think it has the most potential.

Simple sketches which were followed to produce my rough massing model
